When Alfa Romeo launched the 4C, the world didn’t quite know what to do with it. On paper, it was priced to compete with the Porsche Cayman. But underneath the beautiful Italian bodywork, Alfa had hidden a piece of engineering usually reserved for the hypercard elite: a full carbon-fibre monocoque chassis.
Baking a carbon-fibre tub is incredibly expensive. To offset that cost and keep the car somewhat affordable, Alfa’s engineers went on a ruthless weight-saving crusade that stripped the car of all modern comforts. They shaved the window glass down. They ripped out the sound deadening. They deleted the muffler from the factory. They even threw out the power steering system entirely, meaning you felt every single pebble on the road through the steering wheel.
Powered by a tiny 1.75 litre turbocharged inline-4 making 237 horsepower, the car weighed under 2,500 lbs. It didn’t need massive V8 power because it weighed virtually nothing.
The mainstream automotive press hated it. They called it uncompromising, exhausting to drive, and too loud. But they missed the point.
Hand-assembled in the Maserati factory in Modena, the 4C was never meant to be a comfortable daily driver. It was a raw, unfiltered, street-legal track weapon. It was a baby hypercard disguised as a pocket rocket. And as everything goes digital and heavy, the 4C is rapidly becoming a highly sought-after modern classic.
