Turismo Internazionale. A proud tradition.
At Alfa Romeo, the designation ‘TI’ has always been reserved for models that combine exclusivity with performance, even by the high standards of the marque. The first-ever ‘Turismo Internazionale’ Alfa Romeo, the Alfa 1900 TI of 1952, was created for production racing and enjoyed a long run of competition success, including victory in the 2-litre class of the 1953 Tour de France. It also proved to be popular with the italian police, much to the regret of the criminal underworld, who rapidly discovered that a well-driven Alfa Romeo TI was a match for most getaway cars….
Exclusivity has always been a potent part of an Alfa TI’s appeal: the famous Giulia TI Super of 1963, with its potent 112bhp engine and disc brakes all-round (almost unheard of at the time) was limited to just 500 models.
Another revolutionary Alfa Romeo, which changed the face of motoring and paved the way for the sports hatchbacks of today, was the Alfasud, the company’s first front-wheel-drive production car, produced from 1972 to 1983. This too earned its stripes in competition with a TI version, its punchy 1.2 litre ‘boxer’ engine and light weight giving it the performance to embarrass many a larger sports car.
More recently, Alfa Romeo created a TI version of the Alfa 155, which was produced between 1992 and 1998. The Alfa 155 V6 TI contested the prestigious German DTM Touring Car series, winning it outright in 1993 with Nicola Larini at the wheel. During that period the Alfa 155 TI also won the British equivalent, the BTCC, the Italian Superturismo championship and the Spanish Touring Car championship. Other Alfa Romeo models to be offered TI specification include the Alfa 146 hatchback and the 1998 Car of the Year, the Alfa 156.
For well over 50 years, an Alfa Romeo TI has embodied performance, exclusivity and style.
A proud tradition, triumphantly upheld in a long line: The Alfa 159 TI.
